You live your life, you go in shadows… Celebrating David Roback Guitarist for Mazzy Star
David Roback, the producer, multi-instrumentalist, and co-founder of iconic and influential 90s shoegaze duo Mazzy Star, was found dead on Monday at the age of 61. A representative of the band confirmed the news to Rolling Stone, but declined to reveal a cause of death.
Hearing about David Robacks passing is distressing. It feels like yesterday when I fell in love with Mazzy Star. Especially this song Fade Into You. Although this song was in 2005 it always made my mixtapes.
A Los Angeles native Roback was active in the Paisley Underground music scene in the mid-1980s as the leader of the band Rain Parade. His guitar and vocals are a brilliant centerpiece heard here in This Can’t Be Today.
Although in 1984 I was only 8 at the time, I was an old soul and became interested in my teens.
Roback left Rain Parade to join Rainy Day, a collaborative effort still hovering around the grove of that Paisley Underground Music Scene. After releasing Opal with vocalist/bassist Kendra Smith. After one EP and one album, Smith was replaced by Hope Sandoval, and Roback changed the name to Mazzy Star in 1989.
Roback also wrote and produced the songs Maggie Cheung sang in the 2004 film Clean. Maggie Cheung won “The Best Actress” at Cannes for this role, and it was breathtaking. Robuck also played himself in the film.
