This 2023 Renegade Film Festival will be Epic!
Get ready for the tissues because I have something to say about this festival, and yes it is very personal and meaningful. Some of my big life moments started at the Renegade, so it has a very special place in my heart. I am going to tell you a different side to The Renegade Film Festival.
From day one entering the doors at The Strand, The Renegade Film Festival has been a staple in my life. Including getting engaged to my now husband, and networking with like-minded people who later I would call my film family, and instead of family night we all went on to make award winning films together.
We wouldn’t have Weebles our cat if it was for meeting Sean Gunn at The Renegade. Weebles Gunn is our film cat and is the best cat ever. He sits on my lap often for a good movie by the fire.
The Renegade Film Festival is a unique and special event that brings together individuals from all stages of their film careers. The festival creates a sense of community and belonging, similar to the popular TV show “Cheers,” where newcomers are always welcome, and people want to go where everyone knows your name. This festival holds a special significance for those involved and is preferred over more well-known festivals such as Sundance.
People travel from all over the world to be there, and in fact I met one of my favorite people Kei/Xi, a British film director who also took home the coveted Lizzy. A filmmaker who put her life on the line to make her art and passion. How inspiring.
Do you get what I am trying to shove down your throat here? Because words cannot describe the feeling you get. You just have to go experience it all for yourself.
Vanessa Wright is a highly respected and accomplished individual in the film industry. She is known for her positive and uplifting attitude, her advocacy for women in filmmaking, and her dedication to teaching children about the film industry. Her festival is considered a “home” for filmmakers and is highly sought after by celebrities. It is clear that she is both a leader and an inspiration in the industry.
The Renegade Film Festival has played a significant role in my journey to return to my passion for filmmaking. The atmosphere Vanessa has created inspires me to keep finding ways to grow, learn and wield my craft into something special. Who know maybe one day I too could win that coveted Lizzy.

The festival’s mission is to foster a sense of community, empower creators, and promote inclusion and visibility. The festival is committed to showcasing diverse content and bringing balance and equality to independent cinema. By providing a platform for underrepresented voices, The Renegade Film Festival is playing an important role in promoting diversity and inclusivity in the film industry, and 2023 will not be any different!
